HEY THERE !!
If you happen to come across this post on FIBROIDS AND SURGERY , CONGRATULATIONS on your first step towards trying to know your body !
First of all, as a doctor who has operated and treated FIBROIDS in thousands of patients, i would like to tell you that you should know following concepts about fibroids –
- FIBROIDS ARE NON CANCEROUS GROWTH OF YOUR WOMB / UTERUS
- Fibroids mainly affect reproductive age group
- Fibroids do occur even in unmarried female
- Fibroids can cause pain
- Fibroids can be a cause of heavy menstrual bleeding
- Fibroids may impact your pregnancy
- Most fibroids will not affect your fertility
- FIBROIDS may become very HUGE and be a concern by causing a LUMP in your tummy
- Most importantly , ALL FIBROIDS DO NOT NEED REMOVAL
There is not a single size at which fibroids always would require a surgery. Surgery is typically reserved for those fibroids which are causing you symptoms (regardless of its size), or for fibroids larger than 5 cm . HUGE FIBROIDS typically over 10 cm are often referred as GIANT FIBROIDS and most likely would need an intervention.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE FIBROID SURGERY / MYOMECTOMY
SIZE: Although, surgery is considered typically for larger fibroids, a small fibroid located in the inner lining of uterus or touching the womb cavity enough to cay=use symptoms need removal.
LOCATION: Most fibroids located in the outer lining of uterus outside the womb cavity would not need a removal. however, factors like age, desire for future pregnancies and the overall health of the patient also play a role.
SYMPTOMS: Any size fibroid that causes significant symptoms like heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, pressure or infertility should be evaluated for potential treatment, including surgery.
AND,
the good news for whosoever is reading this blog is, ALL FIBROIDS ARE AMENABLE TO LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY unless there is a doubt of malignancy in them.
